behind one's back

Explanation: What is an idiom?

Talking negatively about someone without them knowing

-Did you know that Pam broke up with Tom? I bet she thinks she's too good for him. She kept talking negatively about him but could you imagine Tom doing anything wrong? He's such a nice guy. He really deserves better.

-Quite frankly Bob, I would rather you didn't talk about Pam behind her back.
I've actually been told about the situation first hand and I don't think it's appropriate for you to make any assumptions about their personal life.

Taken quite literally - if you're standing behind someone's back then they can't see you, so you assume they won't hear you either.
