Brass Monkey Weather

Explanation: What is an idiom?

Extremely cold

Context:

"Blimey-O- Riley, it's cold out there."

"Bleedin' brass monkeys, mate."

"Yeah, I might have a Scotch, warm me up."

"What? No lager? You always drink lager. If you don't drink lager in this pub, I'll never speak to you again."

"You don't mean that. Do you?"

"Of course I do."

"Barman, a double Scotch please!"

Notes:

Now, I'd be willing to bet a month's wages (about £3.50) that this idiom doesn't translate into your own language. It sounds rude, balls being the name we give to testicles, but in actual fact, a brass monkey is a metal plate on a warship upon which cannon balls were stacked for use in battles. In very cold weather, the metal contracted, causing the balls to fall down.

We also say just 'Brass Monkeys'
